When it is just you and your mom or dad and there’s something on your mind, how do you start a conversation? Here are some icebreakers that might just do the trick:

  • “Can we go out this weekend somewhere? There’s something I want to talk about, and I’d like to have privacy.”

  • “How did you deal with this problem I am having when you were my age? I could really use some ideas.”

  • “I was wondering if you could listen and let me talk something through, and then you could tell me what you think.”

  • “I feel dumb asking this, but I’m just going to do it anyway.”

  • “This is embarrassing, but can we talk about __________? I really need some help!”

  • “It’s been awhile since we talked about ____________, and some things have changed. Can I tell you what I’m thinking now?”

Don’t let feeling embarrassed, dumb, nervous or reluctant stop you from talking with a parent. You may be surprised by how helpful they can be.
